Oh my word the defence! Seriously, every time Russia went forward, the Spanish defence were all over the place. Luckily, Russia were without, in my opinion, their two best players in Pogrebynak and Arshavin, otherwise it would have been very different.
On the positive side, David Villa was on fire! If he can play like this in the rest of the tournament, Spain have as good a chance as anyone to win the competition. They need to sort out that defence though! Raul Albiol needs to play!!!  ;D

i can think of at least 4 occasions where it was possible for the Russians to have scored. they had better control of the game in my opinion, and they were more organised. Aragones just got lucky that Villa was having a good game and that everyone that assisted in the goals were fully aware of each other's positions.

ha Albiol. i didnt like the starting 11 to be honest. and it was a bit sad to see iconic players not up there or even called. it'll all change when VDB takes charge.

I don't know if i would say that Russia had more control, i just think that Spain may struggle a little when they play against a team with a more potent strikeforce. However, i like what i've seen so far, i mean it's only the first game of the tournament and the opening game is always the most difficult. As the tournament progresses, i am sure that the Spanish defence will improve a lot.
I agree that it is a little disappointing to see some players left out of the squad but at least it gives the younger players an opportunity.

you can't deny that Russia created more opportunities, they just can't capitalise on them yet. they'll get better though.
i'm not really worried about other the other teams. i think the only team Spain should fear is Sweden, or basically just Zlatan.

Is it true that David Villa broke a finger after he celebrated the 2nd goal with Torres?

Villa!!!!

I did not expect the win at the end, and then he scores.
The 2nd half was boring, Sweden seemed to settle for a draw unlike Spain who fought for the win IMO.

^exactly, Sweden did nothing but defend in the 2nd half. that's why Spain clearly deserves the victory imo.
