Portugal and Spain formalise joint bid to host World Cup
« on: 19 January 2009, 17:59:41 »
LISBON, Jan 19 (Reuters) - The soccer federations of Portugal and Spain on Monday signed the document formalising the intention of the two Iberian countries to jointly host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup finals.

"We will create a joint commision to assess all FIFA conditions," Portuguese Federation president Gilberto Madail told reporters after signing the FIFA document with Spaniah counterpart Angel Maria Villar.

The winning bid will be announced in December 2010.

European champions Spain and Portugal declared their interest in hosting the tournament after FIFA said it would welcome bids for both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said Spain, alone or with Portugal, were strong candidates to be hosts in 2018, as were England and the Netherlands with Belgium.

Australia, China, Mexico and Russia have also expressed interest.

Spain has not hosted the World Cup finals since 1982, but Portugal built 10 new stadiums to host the European Championship in 2004.

The 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa while Brazil will host the 2014 tournament.

Hopefully they'll be successful. :) One day we'll host it again... Perhaps. ::lol::

I'd definitely go if it were held there.

It would be great if they got it. Though I think Spain alone could host the WC but if Portugal makes the bid stronger then so be it.

Portugal tried to make a joint bid with Spain for Euro2004 but the spanish said no nso UEFA gave it all to us! Glory days! ::lol::

2018 still far. But it is a good ideia since we share a lot with our spanish amigos and we also share a big passion for football. And Cristiano will be 33, mature and hot I hope. And still playing of course!

The moment I heard the news, I was adding up the numbers to get Cristiano's age by that time.  ::lol::  And 33 doesn't look too bad at all.  ;D

I still prefer the "Cristiano-sexy" over the "Figo-sexy", but I do get the point.  ::lol::

He'd probably be in real Figo-mode already by then.
