I can see where you are coming from, Jade. Like I said, I was never really a fan of the Alice fandom, I've never really seen the Disney animated film, and from what little I did see, I can't recall it much. Even all the remakes that have ensued, I've never known all that much about it. I went into the film not expecting much, and I guess that's why I enjoyed it. Although, I can agree that most of the characters were really just there, such as the Red Queen. It seemed like there were there, because if anyone knows just a bit about the Alice fandom, they could recognize the characters quickly and be all, "Oh yeah, hahaha, she says 'Off with your head,' just like I remember seeing."
A critic noted that Wonderland seemed like a depressed aftermath of what once was and it really sucked out all the fun and wonderment of what the fans know of Wonderland. They also didn't like the way the plot was done for this film. Though I like the simplistic storyline (although, to be honest, I didn't really care for the plot), I agree that it would have been a much better story if Burton had stuck to the original storyline of young girl Alice falling into Wonderland. I just enjoyed that the journey Alice goes through.

the acting was so dry by the girl who played Alice, and why did she look all sickly and dying?

The girl who played Alice looked sort of....ugly. I'm generally not a fan of dark brown eyes with light blonde hair. And her paleness made her look even more freakishly.
I'm not sure why she was so pale. That's kind of a Tim Burton thing. In many of his films, there's a trend of many characters being rather pale. I think it's just an image he really likes. It didn't bother me....but then again, I'm really used to seeing really pale characters in Tim Burton movies.

Oh, hooray! I just read two fascinating things!
1) Tim Burton is finally going to bring "Frankenweenie" to the big screens! I remember him saying in the "NBC" special features that he wanted to make it stop motion. Not sure if it will be, but I thought the short live action film he made of it in the 1980's was really cute.
2)OH.MY.GOSH. I hope that it will happen. I will be a very happy fan if this happens.

I know it's really unimportant and nit-picky, but I agree with this.  It's always bugged me, Alice should have brown hair - at least, she does in my head.  The girl she was based on had dark hair and pale skin, very English looking.  ::lol::

I agree that it would have been a much better story if Burton had stuck to the original storyline of young girl Alice falling into Wonderland. I just enjoyed that the journey Alice goes through.

It was always supposed to be a children's story, and by making her an adult has completely taken the magic away for me.  Alice has her 7th-and-a-half birthday in Wonderland for god's sake.  ::lol::

But to give Burton credit, they recited the Jabberwocky poem in the film.  It made me feel all nostalgic, we studied that poem in Primary school.

I ordered the two Alice books from amazon yesterday. I didn't like the movie, but it has made me curious what the books are look. I've only ever read the first page of the first book (and I know it by heart).

Saw Alice in Wonderland recently. It was ok, but not brilliant.

Shutter Island on the other hand was a great film. A psychological thriller that is well worth a watch IMO. Plus Leo was awesome in it. He's such a good actor! 8) (looks good too, more mature, but then I've had a bit of a crush on him since his Titanic days ::lol::).

I thought it was ok but not great. It's one of those films you can only watch once.

Ridley Scott's Robin Hood trailer.

It looks EPIC, but I can tell it's going to be more actioney than I'd like, and I hate that Cate Blanchett is Maid Marion. DO NOT LIKE.  Can't wait to see it though, I know the Robin Hood story like the back of my hand, looking forward to seeing Scott's take on things.

Just to put it out there, Alice in Wonderland was not a remake, but a sequel to the animated Disney movie.

I kind of thought it was Tim's own interpretation. It wasn't supposed to be a straight up remake, and, yeah, more of a sequel, but it wasn't supposed to be a direct adaptation.

Yeah ::lol:: Tim said it was a sequel himself.

I thought it was alright, but I do agree with Jade, nothing will beat the novel.

And I will always love the animated Disney movie.

Well Burton didn't like the book so it was kind of his own interpretation stroke sequel.

It still had that weird/ odd atmosphere, to me it did anyways.

When I think back on the acting, the 'Alice' actress, here name escapes me at the moment, did seem quite...lagging something that should have been there. ::lol::

I did however enjoy the queens, especially the red queen.
