Ezequiel Garay
« on: 23 August 2009, 00:51:45 »
I searched and I checked this entire board but I didn't see a thread for him, hopefully I didn't miss it!

"A strong Argentine defender with great ball placement"

Place of Birth: Rosario, Argentina
Date of Birth: 10/10/1986
Position: Defender
Height: 6'2" / 189 cm
Nationality: Argentine

Bio:
Ezequiel Garay was born on 10 October 1986 in Rosario, Argentina. He began his professional career in 2004 when he debuted with Newell?s Old Boys, who went on to win that season's Torneo Apertura, their first title since 1992.

Coming of age in Santander
Garay joined Racing midway through the 2005/06 campaign. His first few months were spent adjusting to Spanish football, and in his first complete season he rose to stardom as one of the top defenders in La Liga. It only took five matches for then coach Miguel Ángel Portugal to grant Garay a spot in the starting lineup, and the player hasn't looked back since.

Not only did Garay stand out for his versatility, strength, and speed, but he finished his first season with Racing as Europe's highest scoring defender; 10 goals in 31 matches, including a brace in El Sardinero against Real Madrid. This season he was instrumental in guiding the outfit to a Copa del Rey semifinal showdown against Getafe, during which he suffered a fortuitous injury which kept him sidelined for the remainder of the year.

Decisive set-piece maestro
Ezequiel Garay is a tall defender and very competitive in the aerial game. While he can also anticipate plays and possesses superb reaction time, what sets him apart from other defenders is his set-piece stroke. A frequent penalty and free kick taker, Ezequiel Garay already showed the Santiago Bernabéu what he is capable of when he placed the ball into the upper right corner of Iker's net a couple seasons ago.

Sticking with youth
Garay's hiring is proof that Real Madrid is sticking with its commitment to sign young players. The defender is only 22 and has a long career ahead of him, and one year before moving to the Spanish capital he's got the chance to tie up any loose ends in his game by participating in the UEFA Cup with Racing.

International for Argentina
In May 2007 Garay was a member of the Argentine national team's European tour with matches against Switzerland, Algeria, and Serbia. Although injury prevented him from debuting and participating in the 2007 Copa America, he did make his first appearance in August of that same year against Norway. He was also a member of the 2005 Under-20 World Cup champion squad in the Netherlands.

Honors:
Torneo Apertura: 2004
Under-20 World Champion: 2005
Olympic Gold Medal: 2008

Career:
Newell?s Old Boys (2004/05)
Newell?s Old Boys/Racing Santander (2005/06)
Racing Santander (2006-2008)
Real Madrid (2009-present)

"I try to learn what Real Madrid is all about and enjoy the team"
Arancha Diaz / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

Ezequiel Garay said he's been enjoying himself during the preseason and that he is delighted to be on the team.

How has the preseason been for you? Are you nervous about your presentation?
The preseason has been very special for me because it is nice to train next to team-mates that have superstar status. I try to distance myself from the presentation and instead try to learn what Real Madrid is all about and enjoy the team.

How is Sneijder?
He is integrated in the team and he looks fine to us. He is a great player.

Did you ever think you would leave Real Madrid?
No. I think you can always get something good out of working hard on a daily basis. It's obviously somewhat uncomfortable to have other teams interested in you, but it is also flattering at the same time. I knew what I had to do, which was to work hard in order to convince the coach and the Board.

What do you think of the possibility of having several players on the team without registration in competitions at the start of the season?
That's up to the Club. These things happen... It's a shame, but we must accept it.

Is it good or bad for the squad?
I don't know. We all know what we are here for and what we must do for the Club.

What did you think of Usain Bolt's record? Did you know he might visit the team?
He is a very interesting person to meet because he achieves superhuman feats. I can't believe what I see when I watch him on the TV. It makes me very happy to have the chance to meet such a sportsman.

It's been rumoured that Espanyol are interested in signing you. Has Pellegrini spoken to you about that?
There's been talk of some teams being interested in me, but the coach always comes to me first to tell me he counts on me. That makes me happy and gives me strength to carry on.

How is Cristiano Ronaldo coming along?
As we all know, Cristiano is both a great guy and a phenomenal player. He is integrating gradually and seems to be fine. I am delighted to play with him.

Do you think he feels the pressure of his transfer fee or uncomfortable with the tactical system?
His adaptation will take some time because he is on a new team, he has a new coach and he lives in a different city. He is an excellent player and he will soon start to shine on the pitch. I think he can do a lot for us.

Who's better, Messi or Ronaldo?
That's a tricky question for me because Messi is my compatriot. I've always said he surprised me when I first saw him play with the Argentinean Under-15 national team. Both are great players; they play for the best teams in the world for a reason.

Garay, Granero, Arbeloa and Alonso were welcomed by the fans before the match
Javier Coloma / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

Four of Real Madrid's latest signings were officially presented at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium before the match against Rosenborg kicked-off.

Xabi Alonso, Arbeloa, Granero and Garay came out of the dressing room following a screening of personalised videos and received a great ovation from the stands. It was a simple yet very emotional act.

The four players arrived when the team was way into the preseason and were not able to have individual presentation acts, making the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy the perfect moment for them to officially meet their fans at a packed stadium.
