Alessandro Del Piero Snubbed Inexplicably for Individual Honors
by Nathan Lowe

Alessandro Del Piero was omitted from contention for any of the major individual European and World football honors despite sculpting an Italian renaissance last season for Juventus.

The Italian led the Serie A in scoring, netting 21 times for his beloved club while also contributing directly to many of strike-partner Trezeguet's 20 goals.

In fact, it was the diminutive Del Piero who set up the Frenchman on the last day of the season to equal his own tally for the year, only to cheekily score again in the match while Trezeguet stood open in front of an empty net.

Perhaps his absence in the award ceremonies highlights the over-emphasis FIFA places on international competition, as Del Piero didn't have much of a year wearing the blue of his nation, and Juventus did not compete in the Champion's League.

Nor was his impact on Serie A impressive to France Football, who snubbed the player in the shortlist for the Ballon d'Or.

To further complicate matters and contribute to this strange coincidence, Del Piero was not shortlisted for either FifPro award?the individual honor or the World XI list, which is voted on by players.

Despite, at the age of 34, leading all scorers in the Italian top flight, the aging genius did not even get a mention.

Many of his goals during 2007/2008 were downright crackers. Classy finishes on breakaways, curling and driven free-kicks, and clinical finishes inside the box.

It's inexplicable how the man who led the Italian line on FIFA 96, as John Motson invariably yelled "Del Piero.. Del Piero!", could lead all scorers 11 years later and not even cordially make a shortlist.

Kaka made the final XI for the FifPro award, and is expected to challenge Ronaldo for both the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year, despite AC Milan failing to qualify for the Champion's League. Del Piero appeared seven more times in the top flight than the young Brazilian, scoring six more goals.

Kaka scored twice in eight appearances for Milan during their disappointing Champion's League campaign.

Del Piero somehow evaded any accolades for his brilliance last season, but the masterful Italian deservedly has all my plaudits in writing.

Even when Juventus won the Scudetto, Champions League and Club World Cup in two years and Alex was CL topscorer for two consecutive years (in 1997 10 out of 10) he wasn't even nominated.

They don't like Alex, that's for sure. He never got any personal accolades outside of Italy. Nothing, in 15 years.

Del Piero Is Having Fun - Ranieri

Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri is delighted and full of praise for his side following their 2-0 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu and he has picked out Del Piero as the golden boy...

The Bianconeri did the business in style after a stunning display by captain, talisman and all round hero Alessandro Del Piero. Pinturricchio grabbed a brace and he led the charge by example to send his team into the next phase.

Ranieri has picked out the Italian and poured huge praise on him.

"Del Piero was excellent, really excellent but it wasn't just today," Ranieri told Sky Sport Italia.

"The captain is having fun and he has taken the team on his shoulders and the beautiful thing about Del Piero is that he helps the team and sacrifices himself for everyone and he is truly a real captain.

"It's not just anything coming here to the Bernabeu and winning 2-0.

"I don't know if we were perfect but we have been playing like we know over the past few weeks and I think the first game against Real has given us motivation and it was a great game tonight.

"My compliments go out to everyone for the way they played and our strength was to play with a high defensive line which worked for us as we pressed them in the middle and stopped them from passing their way through."

Juventus have also made history as the win is the first in 46 years in Madrid. The last time the Old Lady beat Real at the Bernabeu was in 1962 when Omar Sivori did the damage.

Del Piero: What a moment!
Wednesday 5 November, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alessandro Del Piero admits ?I could not be happier? after two goals put the Bernabeu at his feet.

?We won, played a great game, I scored two goals. Really, how can you get better than that?? grinned the Juventus captain.

He secured the 2-0 victory away to Real Madrid that mathematically qualifies Juve for the knockout phase of the Champions League.

?You live off nights like this and the unique emotion. I am happy the crowd gave me a standing ovation when I left the field.

?It was so great to score and this is a fantastic stadium, so it was a very important match for us. I must admit this is a positive time for me.?

Del Piero has scored four goals in as many Champions League games and three of them were against Real Madrid.

His low drive and free kick earned him a standing ovation at the Bernabeu when substituted in stoppages.

?It is the ultimate feeling in football. To score two goals and win in such a big game, then to be applauded by the opposing fans is a sign of recognition that goes beyond rivalry. It was wonderful.

?I learned from the best with free kicks and always studied, trained hard to get better at this skill.?

Iker Casillas did not set out the defensive wall very well and the Spaniard was left rooted to the spot by his free kick.

?I asked [Christian] Molinaro to extend the wall and decrease the vision the goalkeeper had. I aimed it at the near post and thankfully Casillas stayed there.?

Alex is in incredible form right now despite the fact he turns 34 on Sunday, so what is behind this remarkable consistency?

?My family keeps me grounded and happy, my teammates put their faith in me and physically I am fit. This is a moment when everything is going well. The desire to always improve and work hard is essential, too.

?Fatherhood has helped me and really revitalised my life, plus having confidence is crucial. If you are able to train regularly and focus on objectives to keep getting better, then you always feel fresh.?

Juve are in the knockout round of the Champions League, but this time two years ago were battling in Serie B after the Calciopoli scandal.

?I will never forget playing in Serie B, nor do I wish to. I experienced it wholeheartedly with a smile on my face, as I chose that path and knew we would get back into Serie A and the Champions League. I don't feel as if this is the end of an era, but rather it keeps going.?
