Spain criticised for picking Del Horno ahead of Pernia

MADRID, May 5 (Reuters) - Getafe coach Bernd Schuster has criticised Spain's Luis Aragones for picking Chelsea left back Asier Del Horno ahead of Mariano Pernia for next week's World Cup get-together.

"All Del Horno has done this year is kick Barcelona's Lionel Messi in the Champions League," Schuster told a news conference on Friday.

In February, Del Horno was shown a red card in the first leg of the Champions League first knockout round tie against Barcelona for a late challenge on Messi.

Getafe's Argentine full back Pernia secured dual nationality last week and after a good season in the Primera Liga was expected to be given a chance in Spain's squad before the World Cup.

"Pernia has had a sensational season and scored 10 goals but Aragones is the coach and he has to select a competitive side to try and win the World Cup," said Schuster.

"It's a shame but there is still time for him to make it."

Aragones, who on Friday named a 27-man squad for Monday's get-together, must announce his 23-strong World Cup party by May 15.

Pernia should have been selected. Del Horno has been rubbish this season he doesnt make the 11 half the time Pernia has been fantastic . Luis said if he picked Perina he would have felt bad for Del Horno because he had played in the qualifiers. If only Perina's citizenship arrivied earlier. But he plays for Getafe if he played for Barca he could of got a citizenship in a few months a la Messi style.

Del Horno Hits Back At Schuster

Asier Del Horno has hit back at Bernd Schuster after the German coach criticised the decision to include the Chelsea defender in the Spanish World Cup squad ahead of Mariano Pernía.

The Chelsea left-back believes that he fully deserves his place in Luis Aragonés' squad and accused Schuster of not having seen him play for the Blues this season.

After the provisional 27-man Spain squad was named, the Getafe trainer said: "For me it is no problem. If you prefer a player whose only achievement this season is to kick Leo Messi...and he takes the place of a player that has had a sensational campaign.

"If kicking someone in the Champions League is more important...because that is all he has done this year, then that is shame.

"I would have taken Perniá. But we have to respect another view, which is that of the coach, who has chosen a competitive squad."

Del Horno was furious and stated that he has earned his place in the Spanish set-up.

"I think that I have had a phenomenal year with Chelsea and have won the Premiership in my first season," the former Athletic Bilbao star said.

"If the only thing that Mister Schuster has seen me do this season is kick someone, then he not seen the Premiership or Chelsea very much.

"I am sure that he is angry because his player has not been called into the list of 27, but you have to respect Luis' decision."

Pernía has had an outstanding season for Getafe and believed that he would be called up after taking Spanish citizenship in recent weeks.

Getafe have already agreed a deal with Atlético Madrid which will see the native-Argentinian move to El Calderón in the summer.
