Shevchencko has slight ligament damage in his knee and will be out for around 25 days according to Milan so his fitness for the WC is in doubt

Injured Shevchenko named in squad

Shevchenko injured his knee against Parma
Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin has named Andriy Shevchenko in his 23-man squad for the World Cup, despite the AC Milan striker suffering from a knee injury.
Shevchenko damaged his knee earlier this month against Parma but plans to take part in Ukraine's first appearance at a major soccer tournament.

Dynamo Kiev keeper Oleksandr Shovkovsky is on the list despite a neck problem.

Eight players are from Dynamo, five from Shakhtar Donetsk, four from Dnipro Dniproptrovsk and four from abroad.

Ukraine became the first European team to qualify for the World Cup by winning its group ahead of European champion Greece as well as Turkey and Denmark.

At the World Cup, Ukraine will face Spain, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia in Group H.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ukraine Squad:

Goalkeepers:
Oleksander Shovkovsky (Dynamo Kiev), Andriy Pyatov (Vorskla Poltava), Bogdan Shust (Shakhtar Donetsk)

Defenders: Andriy Nesmachny (Dynamo Kiev), Vladyslav Vashchyuk (Dynamo Kiev), Serhiy Fyodorov (Dynamo Kiev), Volodymyr Yesersky (Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk), Andriy Rusol (Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk), Dmytro Chigrinsky (Shakhtar Donetsk), Vyacheslav Svidersky (Arsenal Kiev)

Midfielders: Anatoly Tymoshchyuk (Shakhtar Donetsk), Oleg Gusiev (Dynamo Kiev), Ruslan Rotan (Dynamo Kiev), Serhiy Nazarenko (Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk), Oleg Shelayev (Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk), Andriy Husin (Krylya Sovietov Samara), Serhiy Rebrov (Dynamo Kiev), Maxim Kalinichenko (Spartak Moscow)

Forwards: Andriy Shevchenko (AC Milan), Andriy Voronin (Bayer Leverkusen), Artyom Milevsky (Dynamo Kiev), Andriy Vorobei (Shakhtar Donetsk), Olexiy Belik (Shakhtar Donetsk)

Blokhin unease at injuries

Oleg Blokhin has bemoaned the recent spate of injuries to his Ukraine squad.

Star man Andrei Shevchenko is just one of a number of players to have gone down with injury and it has hampered Blokhin's pre-World Cup plans.

"Unfortunately, the mood at the moment is not terribly good," said Blokhin.

"In the qualifying games we had only one or two injured players but now we are beginning to feel the impact.

"Things in the forward line and in midfield are more or less all right, but we have serious problems with the defenders."

Blokhin is not to pleased with his options in defence, particularly at right back where the make-shift Sergei Federov is struggling with injury meaning uncapped Dmitro Chigrinski could get his chance.

"We will practically have to build our defence from the ground up," he said.

"For three years we have been unable to solve the problem at right back. We have too few candidates to draw on.

"And we are naturally very worried about Shevchenko. Andrei now is having a two-week break after which he will be able to start training again.

"Of course, with Shevchenko we have one team and without him it is quite another team."

Blokhin insists that he is not worried about talk of a possible move to Chelsea for Shevchenko.

"If this issue is settled quickly there will be no problem," he said.

"He has not spoken to me about it. If he asks me, I will tell him what I think."

Blokhin has also insisted that he has no worries over his number two and three choices in his goalkeeping department as he surprisingly opted for Bogdan Shust and Andrei Piatov as back-up for Alexander Shovkosvky.

"We believe these two young keepers have a good future," Blokhin added.

"Both performed well in the Ukrainian championship."
