^^Well Ive heard from the portuguese ppl who work there that they hated foreign ppl and treated most of them bad but I dont know ppl from there so im not gonna judge.
But the reason I thought that Switz. was bigger is that they have so many languages(I know this is a dumb thing 2 say)so they must have a big territory.  ::lol::
Ppl here ,even though portugal is a small country, arent patriotic here(only in football) but abroad they are really patriotic maybe cause they miss our country

euro 2000 was in Holland and Belgium.
That was the first time 2 countries hosted it, then they did the same at world cup 2002 and now euro 2008.

I think it`s very ok idea to have two countries hosting the tournament.More people get to travel cause there`s more options where to go to watch a game. And both Austria and Switzerland is lovely countries with lots of stuff to do for tourists and the landcapes are beautiful!
I`m going with my sister, two cousins and 4 friends. We`ve applied for the FollowMyTeam-tickets so Portugal better qualify!

Roger Federer is one of the ambassadors and the slogan is `Expect Emotions`.(Highly important info!) ::lol::

;D lisbongirl, I'm so happy that you know we have 4 official languages in Switzerland. Most of people that I'v ever met in other countries had no idea about it, they were thinking that official language of Switzerland is German and everybody just speaking it :-\
About hating foreign people you are kind of right some of the old swiss generations are treating immigrants and foreign workers not in a very good way :-[(but they are not really racist). However as long as you are tourist you are welcome and they treat you very nice. By the way, my city is different, Geneva is an international city and Geneva Canton has the most foreign citizens. People here are used to hosting a variety of cultures, so you can come to Geneva and be my guest, I promise, you will be safe and nobody hates you ;)

*Miss_Germany*, I think its not just the accent, but also the difference between German and Swiss-German that makes it hard to understand. I have been taught  in school that Swiss-German is very different from the German spoken in Germany or Austria. Also, my grandpa (he is a Swiss-German) told me the written German is very different from the Swiss-German, it's almost like a foreign language.(but I'm not 100% sure, since I'm not a Swiss-German speaker :-\)
::lol:: you are right swiss people are really proud of their country. As a swiss I'm really proud of my country, because of its strong economy and being a permanent neutral country :)

Aggie, I hope you and your friends have lots of fun in Austria and Switzerland during Euro 2008 ;)

In Portugal we know that thing about the 4 official languages cause ppl from here have emigrated a lot 2 Swizt.
Ok thanks for the invitation and I say the same 2 u when u come 2 portugal and Geneva is talked a lot in Portugal on the news.
Like I said those portuguese emigrants said that but I dont know ppl from there and Ive never been in ur country so I have no right 2 judge cause in portugal we had a stupid thing cause a guy from a nationalist party put on the centre of lisbon saying a thing like that go away foreign ppl and this is so stupid.
But am I wrong or our generation is more tolerant or inteligent than the others?

Yes it is true that some people in Switzerland are conservative! Especially the farmers? and as yeganeh said the people in the French part of Switzerland are less conservative as the people from the german part. We always see that very well if we have something to vote for. But the most people are nice to foreigners but there are always exceptions.

We have really a huge accent and in every canton is a different accent. Do never try to understand someone from sion! It?s like a different language :P

:) No Sara it's not a stupid question. In my opinion, traveling from one canton to another one with different language is like going to another country.
You know, strong regionalisem makes it hart to speak of a homgeneous Swiss culture. Infact, our culture is a mixture of the German, French, and Italian cultures and you can see significant difference between language areas in term of culture. In general, I can say ppl from French speaking cantons have tended to orient themselves more on French cultre, and ppl from Swiss-German speaking cantons perhaps have tended to orient themselves on German cultre (in my opinion they are more taditional than ppl from French speaking cantons), and same with Italian speaking cantons they have more Italian culture. Also, as shana mentioned ppl from French speaking cantons tend to be more open minded, while ppl from Swiss-German speaking cantons are more conservative and you can see it by studying the result of any election in Switzerland.
But culture isn't the only difference that you can see when you are going to another canton with a different language as yours. The Tv cables and programs have a daramatic change too. For example, in French speaking cantons most of the programs are in French from France, Belgium, Canada, and Switzerland, while it's totally different in Swiss-German speaking cantons. So, by all these changes, for me traveling to another canton it's like going to another country :P
You know, sometimes I just wonder what keeps all these cantons together as Switzerland, we don't have so much in common like other countries.

Thank u so much Yeganeh.  ;) But Switz. reminds me of Spain(I know this is a total different case) cause they ok have the same official language but they got in some regions another languages like catalan, basc, gallego and they are kind of different in terms of personality

Hey, i saw this thread and though i will post here, cause i'm from switzerland! here were many things said i can agree, but other no..
yeah sadly there are many conservative people around, like in every country too much.. and especially the farmers are very conservative.. but there are many social people too. our president (female) is for example from the social democrats, which is my party too.
about the languages, yea there are four languages spoken in a very small country, and that what i like best. we learn french in school (i learn it since 8 years).. so if i, which lives in the very east of switzerland go to geneva, i dont think it feels like another country.. we are one country, and the most people speak foreign languages and its no problem to communicate. for example if you watch swiss tv (german) and there is someone given an interview in french, its not translated (mostly). im only half swiss, but thats very often like that here in switzerland, many italians, spanish and many different cultures. i dont think the swiss people are very proud of their country when i compare with other countries, for example not many people can sing the swiss hymne. but we are really happy to have the European Championsship here, its gonna be a big event.. by the way someone said: swiss german has not much difference from austrian  or germany's german.. it has!! really much, its like we can speak german if we want, we have to in school for example.. but when i talk to a german person in swiss german, she doesnt understand a word.. so yeah if someone has a question just ask :D
