Tevez link denied

Eurosport - 05/05/2006

Premiership round-up: Owen set for comeback
Video: PSG down MarseilleCorinthians denied that Chelsea were chasing striker Carlos Tevez after Jose Mourinho watched their game against River Plate on Thursday while the Premier League refuse to give Newcastle interim boss Glenn Roeder special dispensation to manage next season.

"It's got nothing to do with Tevez," said Kia Joorabchian, the president of London-based Media Sports Investments who have invested millions of dollars in Corinthians.

"Mourinho is on holiday and can do what he wants," Joorabchian told Brazilian media. "This visit has nothing to do with our player."

Corinthians, the Brazilian champions, signed the Argentina forward from Boca Juniors in 2004 for a South American record fee of $18 million.

Mourinho refused to make any comment, saying only that he had come to watch the game.

Argentina's River Plate won 3-1 in a match which was abandoned in the 83rd minute after Corinthians fans broke down a gate and fought with riot police.

Robben rubbishes move rumours

Eurosport - 05/05/2006

Arjen Robben expects to stay at Chelsea next season and refuses to worry about rumours of big-money signings at Stamford Bridge. The Netherlands winger has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur after a high-achieving but fitful season at Stamford Bridge.

"I'm never concerned because I always go from my own qualities. I have a lot of confidence in myself and I'm not afraid for my place," Robben told reporters after training on Friday.

Robben has helped Chelsea to their second Premier League title in a row but his form and discipline have been erratic at times this season, leading to newspaper speculation that he could be allowed to move to compatriot Martin Jol's high-flying Spurs side.

Manchester United could also be alerted to Robben's availability, with Ryan Giggs now in the veteran stage of his career and the second-placed Premiership side generally short of options in midfield.

"Of course you know at Chelsea that you can't play every game because it's a world class squad and maybe with extra world class players coming in it's going to be even harder."

BALLACK THREAT

With Bayern's Michael Ballack expected to join Chelsea next season and Jose Mourinho searching for a World-class striker, there are likely to be several new faces at the Bridge next season.

Robben dismissed speculation about a move and said he is already thinking ahead to next season.

"I have three years left on my contract," he said. "I'm more satisfied by last season than I was by this season and I want to do more.

"That's why I'm looking forward to next year - because I think and I'm sure that I can do more than I did this time. I'm very confident and really looking forward to next season and hope to win prizes again."

Robben insists he is still learning and improving in English football.

"I think you always learn. I learn in every training session and every game. I think people forget sometimes I'm only 22 still. I'm still quite young and I'm still learning and developing. I know I can develop myself much more and that's what I'm working for."

Ballack joins Chelsea

Chelsea have signed Germany captain Michael Ballack on a three-year contract. The 29-year-old, who moves to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer after his Bayern Munich contract expires this summer, told a news conference: 'I am very happy to be here. Fed-up Drogba eyes European move

Chelsea's Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba says he wants to leave English football because he is fed up with the criticism he has received.
The 28-year-old, who cost £24m from Marseille in 2004, had to issue a retraction recently after admitting diving and scoring with his hand.

"I want to move on and avoid all the pressure and scandals. Those things hurt my feelings," he told the Sun.

"Anywhere I go, the Champions League will be there waiting for me."

Drogba was Chelsea's second top scorer last season with 16 goals as they won their second consecutive Premiership title.

But he made headlines for the wrong reasons when he told a Match of the Day interview that "somtimes I dive, sometimes I stand", before correcting the comment.

In the same interview, after a 2-0 win over Manchester City, he admitted handling the ball as he scored one of the goals.

"Yes, it was handball, but that's part of the game," he said.

"If City had done it, no-one would have mentioned it. But everyone is out to make a big mess about Chelsea."

Drogba has indicated he would like to move to Italy.

Chelsea to discuss Lampard deal

Frank Lampard will begin contract talks with Chelsea after the World Cup, according to the England star's agent.
The 28-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge but recently revealed his intentions to stay at the club.

Agent Steve Kutner said: "I have spoken to Peter Kenyon and we are looking to sit down shortly after the World Cup."

Lampard has three years left on the five-year deal he signed in the summer of 2004.

Meanwhile, new signing Michael Ballack has revealed he expects to finish his career at Chelsea.

The 29-year-old German completed his free transfer from Bayern Munich, signing a three-year deal, and said he hoped it would be his last club.

"I'd like to finish my career here," Ballack said. "I hope things work out well and that we're successful in the next three years and the possibility will exist to extend that contract.

The strengths of the English midfield are well known

Michael Ballack

"You could say that is my vision at the moment, to end my career at Chelsea."

Ballack may face his new team-mates during the summer with the prospect of England and Germany playing each other in the second round of the World Cup.

He added: "Germany always has great respect for England, comparable with Brazil, Italy and Argentina.

"The strengths of the English midfield are well known but, given that, the people of Germany would always look forward to England playing Germany.

"It is always a big game. It is a duel and we will look forward to renewing that duel."

Chelsea seal Kalou deal

Chelsea have reached an agreement with Feyenoord for the capture of Ivory Coast striker Salomon Kalou.

The 20-year-old striker, who netted 42 goals in 83 starts for Feyenoord, has put pen-to-paper on a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

"I didn?t dream of joining such a big club as early as this," Kalou said.

"I?m happy and proud that I will be able to tell my children and grandchildren that I played for clubs like Chelsea and Feyenoord."

Kalou signed for Feyenoord on the recommendation of older brother Bonaventure, who left the Rotterdam outfit for Auxerre in 2003 following six successful years at the club.

After a year on loan at Excelsior, Kalou exploded onto the Eredivisie scene with 20 goals in his first full season grabbing the attention of Marco Van Basten who guaranteed him a World Cup spot if he could secure a Dutch passport.

He learned that this bid failed in May, meaning he also missed out on the opportunity to represent his native Ivory Coast in the Germany showpiece.

Notching another 15 goals in the 2005/2006 season, Kalou confirmed his status as one of the most exciting young players in world football.

"I spoke with Jose Mourinho, in French, and he convinced me," Kalou added.

"I obviously also asked Ruud Gullit about the club and I told him that I?m proud to follow in his footsteps. He is the one that gave me the chance at Feyenoord after all.

"I?m not afraid of the competition at Chelsea. I will give my all in London to be successful, I believe in my ability. You always have to try to get the best out of yourself. I will become a better player there."

Kalou will compete with fellow Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba for a slot in the Premiership champions' starting line-up.

Chelsea complete Shevchenko deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of striker Andriy Shevchenko from AC Milan for a fee of around £30m.
The 29-year-old signed a four-year contract on Wednesday after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.

"I am here for the challenge and the excitement of the Premier League," said the Ukraine captain.

It is not clear whether the fee surpasses the British transfer record of £30m which Manchester United paid Leeds for Rio Ferdinand in 2002.

Shevchenko, former European Footballer of the Year, added: "I am going from one big club to another and joining a team of champions.

"There is a right moment to join a football club and I think I have arrived here at the perfect time.

Had money been my motivation for coming, I would probably have stayed in Milan

Andriy Shevchenko

"The Champions League has to be a realistic target for next season but it is not just about the Champions League. Chelsea is going for their third Premiership as well and I like the club's mentality of wanting to win every game they play.

"I have followed Mr (Jose) Mourinho's career carefully for the last few years and have been hugely impressed with the way he manages.

"He puts team ethic before individual expression which is the way I believe great teams are created.  606 VIEW
Shevchenko's arrival would raise the profile of the Premiership

GG
606: Have your say

"Had money been my motivation for coming, I would probably have stayed in Milan.

"I am pleased that Chelsea managed to conclude everything before the World Cup - I can go to Germany with a clear mind and proud to be a Chelsea player."

A statement on AC Milan's website said: "AC Milan communicates it has ceded definitely the sporting rights of Andriy Shevchenko to Chelsea

Uff! I hate to say it but Chelsea's squad looks brilliant. For me the one thing they needed to suceed in europe was a top class striker. Sheva is the highets scoring striker in the history of the CL so i think we can safely say they got who they needed.

Im a big fan of Sheva and im happy hes gone to the premiship because i enjoy watching the premiership unlike Serie A. I think hes a nice guy and i genuinely belive him when he says it isnt about money. Its going to be hard for AC Milan to replace him.

i actually have kinda lost respect for the guy
him signing to chelsea means other players will be put to the bench
just look at SWP - £24 million to warm the bench
and ok, it might not be about money but i really dont see how chelsea is the right club for him...and ballack

But he wanted to go to London because of his wife. She was apparently verbally abused in Milan by Milan fans. So she wanted out and she wanted their son to grow up speaking english. It looks like Crespo is leaving anyway and Drogba has said he wants to leave so he wont push anyone to the bench.

SWP was just greedy.... Milan offered Sheva more money than Chelsea did so its not about money for him.
