Germany Goalkeeper Robert Enke Dies Aged 32

The Nationalmannscahft stopper passed away on the afternoon of November 10th...
Nov 10, 2009 8:30:24 PM

Germany and Hannover goalkeeper Robert Enke has died at the age of 32.

Hannover 96 president Martin Kind announced the death of the former Barcelona stopper on Tuesday afternoon, according to the agency dpa.

Kind said, "It is a tragedy. You expect many things, but not something like that.

"I do not know how and why it happened, but I do not think that it had anything to do with football."

Nothing has yet been officially confirmed about the cause of death, but according to German source Morgenpost Online, early signs point towards suicide.

The website quotes a spokesperson from the Hannover police as saying, "Enke has thrown himself under a train at Neustadt am Rübenberge."

The incident is said to have taken place in the small town of Neustadt at around 18:25 local time.

Unhappy

Enke is survived by his wife, Teresa. The couple had a daughter, Lara, who died at the age of two in 2007. Recently they had adopted a new baby girl.

It has been hinted at by Hannover officials, and stated explicitly by the German press, that Enke never truly recovered from the death of his daughter, and that personal pressures such as these were the cause of his suicide.

Bild journalist Wolf Bruer explained to Sky Sports, "It seems to be deliberate suicide. He has apparently driven his car this evening to a train crossing station (level crossing), waited for the train, and the train hit him.

"The president of Hannover confirmed indeed that it's a very sad news. He also said, very importantly, that he confirmed Robert Enke had been a very unstable person."

Career

Enke's early footballing days were in Jena, his home town, where he made his professional debut with Carl Zeiss Jena in 1995.

From there he moved first to Moenchengladbach and then to Lisbon to play for Benfica, where he remains a cult hero.

Barcelona picked him up on a Bosman deal in 2002, but here he struggled, taking loan spells first at Fenerbahce and then Tenerife.

At the island club, though, he regained sufficient stature to be signed by Hannover, and here he became a late bloomer, becoming captain and gaining international recognition at the age of 29.

Enke's death came at a time when he was undisputed number one for his club and had also regained this title for Germany.

However, a recent bout of illness had seen Enke miss out on the latest Germany squad.

Update 00:24 CET Wednesday: Television channel ARD reports that the site of Enke's death was a mere 200 metres from the grave of his daughter.

Very sad. He was in contention as our first choice keeper for 2010 :(

He was a good man, may God bless his soul & finally, he can be "with" his daughter, Lara.
My prayers goes out to his wife & their daughter.  :(

It's so unbelievably sad. Everytime I read something or see something in television about it, I feel like crying. The obsequies was one of the saddest things I've ever seen.
:'(

I really hope his wife gets enough help and has the strength to handle what happened. Together with her daughter.

Thousands attend Enke's memorial

More than 45,000 fans, friends and team mates have paid their last respects to Germany's national goalkeeper Robert Enke, who killed himself on Tuesday.

His flower-draped coffin was put in the middle of the stadium of his team, Hanover 96, for the memorial ceremony.

"Robert Enke will never come back to this stadium, the place where he conquered our hearts," Hanover 96 club president Martin Kind said.

Enke, 32, who suffered from depression, threw himself under a commuter train.

He had been expected to play his part in the national team at the World Cup finals in South Africa in June 2010.

'Heavy hearts'

People came from all over Germany to attend the memorial service.

German politicians and personalities from the sports world were also present at the memorial ceremony, in addition to the entire national team.

Outside, hundreds of candles and messages had been left by fans in tribute to the popular player.

Two giant video screens were erected for those unable to get inside. The ceremony was broadcast on five German channels.

Enke's wife Teresa cried as she stood in front of the coffin, which was covered in white flowers.

Members of the German national team - dressed in black - also approached the coffin to say goodbye.

Captain Michael Ballack laid a wreath by the coffin.

"You were a number one in the real sense of the word. This is why our hearts are so heavy," Martin Kind said.

The governor of Lower Saxony, Christian Wulff, said that Enke's death should make people rethink society's values.

"We don't need flawless robots. We need human beings with rough edges, with all their weaknesses and wonderful qualities," Mr Wulff said.

"We can only guess how big the pressure was that weighed on him."

As Enke's coffin was driven away, the anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone" was played.

Enke will be buried later during a private ceremony.

Six of his former Hanover 96 club team mates will carry the coffin to its final resting place.

His grave will be next to that of his two-year-old daughter, who died from a heart infection.

Enke's death shocked the football world and there has been a huge outpouring of grief in Germany, says the BBC's Tristana Moore in Berlin.

For the past six years, Robert Enke had kept his depression a secret to protect his private life and career as a professional footballer.

During the service, there was a standing ovation for Enke's widow Teresa who bravely spoke out about her husband's depression at a news conference a day after he committed suicide.

Hanover Mayor Stephan Weil said Teresa Enke had shown remarkable courage by revealing her husband's struggle with depression and he said she had helped break the taboo of mental illness in society.

i can't imagine what it's like for his wife...two major deaths in her life :( tbh, this incident has made me sit up and take notice of how serious depression is.

I feel so much for Teresa. She has been extremely brave infront of the media and today. What a great woman she is, to hold her head so brave throughout this time.

So many have cared for him, yet he didn't see a way out. Tragic for him and everyone involved. Everyone who were in his social circle will always wonder why they didn't see it and what they could have done to prevent it from happening.
