Euro 2008 - Lehmann blames "biased" referee

Eurosport - Mon, 30 Jun 15:54:00 2008

Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann branded referee Roberto Rosetti "arrogant" and "biased" after losing the Euro 2008 final 1-0 to Spain.

While his coach Joachim Loew was gracious in defeat and admitted Spain deserved to win, Lehmann highlighted Rosetti's refusal to send off midfielder David Silva for a mini-headbutt on Lukas Podolski.

"He was very arrogant and in my opinion he was biased. He clearly saw a head-butt from a Spanish player towards Lukas Podolski, he didn't book him or give him a red card.

"Just before the end we had a good chance in the penalty area and all of a sudden he gave a foul against us where even the Spanish players were surprised to get a free-kick. It was very disappointing."

The 38-year-old, who has signed for Stuttgart from Arsenal, said he had not decided whether to retire from international football but would not continue until Euro 2012.

"That's my last Euro match," he said.

"I don't want to talk about anything else. I have to digest this disappointment first. You can imagine if I make any other decisions I'll tell the coach and the other players first."

Lehmann was the hero in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final win over Argentina on penalties but then conceded two late goals in the semi-final to tournament winners Italy.

The keeper also tasted disappointment in the 2006 Champions League final when his Arsenal side lost to Barcelona and he was sent off early on.

He refused to blame left-back Philipp Lahm for the winning goal, after the pair hesitated allowing Fernando Torres to reach a Xavi through-ball.

"I think when you lose 1-0, you always regret certain situations in the game and you are always saying 'if only I had done this, and done that'.

"That's a big disappointment as a player, particularly in my case because that was my last European Championship game and I can't reverse that, it's done," he added.

Loew said he had not talked with Lehmann about retirement, adding: "I didn't speak with him about that. I said 'congratulations you did very well'."

----------

LOL! Well he's a very gracious loser isn't he? I guess he conveniently forgot the fact that the ref let Ballack get away with four (at least on my count) malicious tackles where he was nowhere NEAR the ball. What about the ref booking Torres for an imaginary foul when he clashed heads with another player (his elbow was nowhere near the other player) Or What about booking Iker when he was just trying to stop the fight??! Please...the better team won, end of story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And Germany should never have been in the final, never. They rode their luck...and I'm glad it finally ran out!!!  ::lol::

Lehmann shut up. You did not deserve to win so suck it up and deal. Spain were great, they played the best football in the tournament no arguments.

Germany did play well at times I'll give them that but from what I saw last night (and not just because they're my boys) Spain deservedly won 100%. They were consistent they played beautiful soccer and they had a lot of heart (not saying Germany didn't) not to mention we also got over our barrier which is the most important I think.

One thing I don't like is when people treat Spain's victory as just a simple outcome. I know football is unpredictable and a lot of teeams win like that but come on! To say it was an even match between the two teams is far off but to say that Spain won it just because they scored the only goal or because that's just how it happened is ridiculous.

Yeah, I agree

I was so nervous throughout this whole game that Germany would nick a goal *anytime*. The thing is though, Spain didn't just get lucky with their one goal and Germany didn't just get unlucky by not scoring. Simply put, the better team won and that fact, in and of itself, IS surprising! Its why so many neutrals supported Spain, because quite frankly, people love to see beautiful football

And yes, I don't like the German NT because of what was on full display in the game last night. Here's what I saw: Poldi's little dive early in the game, the provocation of Silva (seriously, go watch that incident on slow mo...you see his eye's shift to find the ref to check if he's watching), Ballack running half the pitch to argue pointlessly to the ref, Ballack's numerous "challenges" on other players that were malicious in nature. I don't like to see those things from any team, and they annoy me. Its why I just can't ever support Ger NT, sorry.

Spain, on the other hand, played beautifully this whole tournament! Never lost a game during the whole thing! And Iker was so, so good! Seriously, they made this tournament enjoyable to watch, so congrats Spain! :)

anyway, JUSTICE for football! VIVA ESPANA!! :) :)

I'm not trying to slate Germany, which is why I don't post in the Germany thread on this board, but I don't agree. Sure, the German squad has tremendous experience and self-belief (which is why they have made it to 13 finals now) but the only good football I saw in this tournament was against Poland. Sorry, but Portugal *lost* the QF, Germany didn't win it. And Ballack *pushed* PF for that 3rd game-winning goal...straight up foul ::) They played horribly against Croatia and Austria. Turkey was the better team in the SF, no doubt about that. Besides, they should have put the ball out of play when Kazim went down injured in the 90th min, but they didn't and scored. That's bad sportmanship. Sure, they got to the final, but they didn't *deserve* it.

Again, that's just MY opinion. I understand if Gers don't agree, obviously, that's cool. But this just what I saw and I believe. No one can convince me that Germany played beautiful football and deserved to be in the final and to win, sorry. They rode their luck, completely. And I'm just glad the better team won.

Oh, and true, Silva should have been redcarded for the headbutt, but if the ref didn't see it, he did the right thing then. You cant hand out redcards on hearsay. And Ballack should have see two yellows for all his malicious tackles and been sent off too...
