2007 FIFA Women's World Cup
« on: 5 September 2007, 20:55:15 »
Sooo, I don't know if anyone else is interested in this but the FIFA Women's World Cup 2007 will be held in China from September 10-September 30.

I'm looking forward to it as my country (Sweden) is going to participate and opposed to the male team actually has a change of getting to the final as they did in 2003.

16 nations will participate in the Women's World Cup finals and these nations are:

www.fifa.com

The last World Cup in 2003, held in the US was won by Germany, followed by Sweden in second and the Us in third place.

If you're not already familiar with her the brazilian Marta is really something to look out for. She plays for my favourite swedish team Umeå and she's awesome, she's really in a league of her own.

Thanks for the info, Anja. ;D

I'm rooting for Australia, but the US will probably win it. ::lol::

You're welcome Jamessy. There hasn't been much interest in the competition on here though  ::lol:: People rather discuss Ronaldo's hooker friends. But I continue my mission to spread knowledge about women's football (at times it's really entertaining), and it is getting more popular:

Television coverage
This year's FIFA Women's World Cup will be the most watched in the history of the tournament. The competition will be broadcast to over 200 countries worldwide, which represents a 25 per cent increase on the 2003 edition.

Girl powah!

The Us of A does have a strong team. I hold them and Germany as favourites to win the title. But I hope that my swedes (because here I actually root for them  ::lol::) will be able to put on a good prafomance.

What do you expect on this forum? Perhaps only 1% of the registered users here actually know something about football. Makes me emo. :'(

I think ESPN in US of A is actually going to show at least the US of A matches. Good luck to Sweden. May the best team win. ;D

ESPN will probably ask Beck-HAM what his opinion on women soccer is, and then show a one hour long interview instead of the game.

Anyway I'm off to bed, I haff to study tomorrow. Have a nice afternoon? Jessy  :-*

Argh, I hope not. This Beck-HAM thing is ridiculous. Beck-HAM is out for most, if not the whole, of the LA Galaxy season. Hahahaha. Wanker.

Thanks. Haff fun tomorrow. Good night. Sweet Iniesta dreams. :-*

The first match (Germany vs. Argentina) was today/yesterday. Germany won 11-0! :o
Poor Argentina. Sadly, didn't get to watch it. :(

Argentina suffer record loss in women's World Cup opener

BEIJING, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Argentina slumped to a humiliating 11-0 loss to Germany in the opening match of the women's World Cup, the worst defeat in the tournament's history.

Just days after the Argentine men's rugby team pulled off a stunning upset to beat hosts France in the first match of their World Cup, a woeful defensive display in Shanghai left Germany 4-0 up in 29 minutes.

"I don't want to comment a great deal about tactics," Argentina coach Jose Carlos Borrello told the FIFA Web site.

"It was a nightmare for our team. Our goalkeeper had a very unfortunate day and gave away two own goals."

Goalkeeper Vanina Correa's second own goal, Germany's 11th, capped off a miserable night for Argentina and put her in the record books as the only women's World Cup player to concede two own goals in a match.

A hat-trick each for Germany's Birgit Prinz and team mate Sandra Smisek was only the second time two players have notched three goals in a World Cup match.

Prinz's treble also brought her alongside United States striker Michelle Akers as the most prolific scorer in women's World Cup history with 12 goals.

"It was much more straightforward than we thought it would be, although it was made easy for us because they gave so much room," Prinz told FIFA.

Borrello, who had said before the match that his players wanted revenge for what happened four years ago in the United States when they lost 6-1 to eventual champions Germany, promised that Argentina would bounce back.

"We're not yet at 100 percent, but I'm certain we'll see a very different Argentina in our next two matches," he said.

Argentina face Japan and England in remaining Group A matches.

:o 11-0, how embarrassing. The south american teams haven't had much success in this competition, Brazil was third once. I've always wondered why, because their players are often superior technique-wise. But then I read this interview with Marta where she said that her brothers/family had to take a lot of crap because she as a girl was playing football and that it wasn't really accepted. I give red card por sexism  >:(

I saw the Sweden vs. Nigeria game today which ended in a draw 1-1. I really thought that we were going to be able to win but the girls got tired near the end and Nigeria managed to score in the 82nd minute.

I watched the opening match, liked it a lot ::lol:: it's a great start to the tournament for Germany, but the next games will be harder, I think.
I feel a bit sorry for the Argentine team, though, especially goal keeper Correa... they all looked as if they wanted to cry after the final whistle  :-\

Poor Marta. :'( Sexism is horrible. Unfortunately it still exists everywhere. I reckon these teams can kick a lot of MNT's asses.

Japan and England drew, 2-2.
US of A and Korea DPR drew, 2-2.

There are 4 matches today, ja!

Hahaha man I fully thought we'd lose by more than that (Good to see we're keeping the faith down here...) to Brazil, especially since they have the incredible Marta in their side. She scored twice but Cristiane's goal was the best I thought. It wasn't a half-bad game either, it was only 1-0 until about 10 minutes after the second half started. Looking forward to the Denmark game.

Thanks for updating Jessy  ;D, I wasn't able to come on yesterday so I couldn't do it.

I saw China vs Denmark and it was a really good game. I kind of get your point Maren (I think? sorry if I got your name wrong ) because women's football is a lot slower than male, and if the teams playing don't have very techincal players either, you kind of loose interest. And then of course most of the women players aren't that well known, and it's always more fun to follow players you know of.  But Chi-Den was a really entertaining game and the goals, especially China's, very brilliant. I'm happy they won because 1. they're the hosting country and the huge crowd there (I think I heard 40-45 000 which is really goof for a women's game) was great and 2. Their coach is a swede, Marika Domanski Lyfors, former coach of the Swedish NT and I really like her.

The games are all on when I sleep, so I haven't been able to watch any. :'(
Abby Wambach (from the USWNT) got all bloody and had to get stitches! She ran into the locker room to get stitches and ran back out to continue playing. Tough girl. Womens Football isn't the same as Mens Football, but I have to support them. These girls put a lot of hard work and effort into what they do.

New Zealand 0 - 5 Brazil :o

Always so positive. ::lol:: At least you aren't completely crushed by the result.

ANJA! Sweden vs. US of A on the 14th! I think I might stay up for this one! ;D
